The World Organization for Animal Health states that animal welfare is defined by the physical and mental state of animals in relation to the conditions in which they live and die. It also states that humans have the responsibility to care for them.

There are five freedoms regonized since 1995:

Freedom from hunger, thirst, and malnutrition.

Freedom from fear and anguish.

Freedom from physical harm and extreme heat and cold.

Freedom from pain, sickness, and injury.

Freedom to express natural behavior patterns
