In Mexico there are citizen initiatives that contribute to the creation of non-profit shelters and sanctuaries. Although their mission is the same, the way they work varies.
According to the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries based in the city of Phoenix, Arizona, United States, "a sanctuary is any facility that provides safe, temporary or permanent shelter to animals in need. It must comply with the principles of providing excellent humane care for its animals within a non-exploitative environment and follow current ethical policies regarding commercial exchange, exhibition, acquisition, disposal and breeding."

These spaces are located in natural habitats, allowing animals to live together freely and, if possible, remain there as long as possible.

On the other hand, shelters are equipped to receive animals and provide them with shelter, but just as a place of passage, since animals are expected to be adopted and welcomed in a permanent home.

Behind the survival of these places is the hand of citizen volunteers and public and private organizations that offer immensurable support since the maintenance of these spaces requires abundant economic and human resources.
