“Only those of us who love dogs can decipher the meaning of their barking” Paty Ruíz
In Mexico City, Milagros Caninos is one of these #SuperstarCaregivers, run by Patricia Ruiz, activist, writer, lecturer, and dog advocate.
After experiencing the loss of Clavo, her beloved Dachshund, in 2004, Ruiz was motivated to found what the American organization Best Friends referred to as “The first sanctuary for dogs in Latin America”.
In her book Milagros Caninos, Paty Ruiz touchingly writes how the phrase "Don't cry, it's just a dog", she heard so many times while grieving reveals our lack of empathy and canine culture.
In 2006 she began her project in a country house located in the upper part of Xochimilco, south of Mexico City, where she has taken in diseased dogs and those who have been abused, and has provided them with emergency care and rehabilitation. Paty Ruiz has promoted adoptions over purchasing dogs, and many of the dogs she has taken in have found their forever home.
The sanctuary can provide specialized veterinary care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dogs suffering from cancer, dogs without legs, blind, deaf, burned, tortured, paralyzed, drugged, dogs without eyes, they have all been helped at the sanctuary. Sadly, the human being can infringe all this suffering on animals.
Ms. Ruiz' works is not just limited to the sanctuary. Paty raises awareness through mass media, sterilization campaigns, and conferences in partnership with artists and opinion leaders. This work is vital to comprehensively address these problems, in which the solutions can be achieved by appealing to the human conscience.
In the prologue of the book by Eugenio Derbez, the actor supports the project stating:
Hopefully understanding her work will drive us to do something for so many homeless, hungry, sick and unprotected puppies, and make us rethink our concept of them, our relationship with them, so that no animal will ever be a victim of abandonment, mistreatment or experiments, and that, in return, they receive all our love and all our respect, because together with these animals we share the world and our lives.
