In 2021 the "Pan American Center for Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Veterinary Public Health of the Pan American Health Organization" together with "World Animal Protection" campaigned to provide truthful information regarding COVID-19 issues and how it affects our pets (dogs and cats).
The expert committee from the two organizations argues that there is no scientific evidence that companion animals (dogs and cats) are a source of infection for humans. There is also no evidence that dogs can get sick. Infection in cats is under investigation. They recommend continuing the practice of hand washing before and after interacting with pets and their belongings, as well as social distancing when infected.
They insist that neither abandonment nor sacrifice are viable solutions for the Covid-19 pandemic and argue that "there is scientific evidence that dogs and cats improve and enrich people´s lives and health. They are great companions, home protectors, can work as production animals and have the ability to learn and perform extraordinary tasks."
"Additionally, they can be great psychological support in times of social distancing by reducing our levels of stress and suicidal tendencies."
PANAFTOSA-PAHO/WHO and WFP are calling. Answer their call !
Let´s take care of them!
Let’s take care of ourselves!
