The researchers Laura Bongiovanni, Philip J. Bergman and Alain De Bruin, scientifically address this specific question from the title of the article published in June 2022 in the portal kids.frontiersin.org

In their research they claim that, like humans, dogs and cats can also suffer from several types of cancer. Due to the similarities in its genetic behavior, cancer is the only disease we share with them. However, they optimistically explain that the effectiveness of the therapies that exist for our companion animals can represent an opportunity to accelerate the development of cancer drugs for people.

They emphasize that veterinarians, medical or scientific, invest a lot of time studying pet cancer, both to cure them and to understand their characteristics and evolutionary process. During the development of these laboratory investigations they have discovered an incredible resemblance between the immune systems of dogs, cats, and humans.

We cannot forget that our relationship with dogs and cats, as well as their domestication, has a millenary history. Dogs in particular, have adapted to our way of life, exposing themselves to the same environmental risk factors such as pollution, which influence the development of diseases.

“What if dogs, cats, and humans could benefit from the same cancer research?”

The group of scientists explains that the process of developing anti-cancer drugs consumes enormous economic resources and is extremely long. Some processes have taken up to 10 years to prove effectiveness.

Since dogs and cats have shorter lives than humans, researchers suggest it is possible to observe the effectiveness of cancer treatments in shorter periods of time.

Experts have introduced a new discipline called Comparative Oncology, in which they integrate the scientific work that is developed for both people and animals, to join efforts and together find the best way to face this difficult disease. Thanks to their work, they have identified the diverse types of cancer of dogs and cats, which has allowed them to develop models to understand human cancers.

They conclude it would be important for people who have companion animals at home to be aware of the ways they can help human cancer patients. Not only with their treatment in case of having the disease, but being in good health, dogs and cats provide positive and fun company that helps reduce moments of stress in people living with cancer.
