What is it like to be a dog?

This is one of the main questions behind the studies developed by Dr. Alexandra Horowitz, Scientist, Writer, and Founder of the Canine Cognition Laboratory located at Barnard College, a college within the Columbia University system, in New York City, USA.
One of her goals is to access the perceptual world of dogs through different exercises that are completed by dogs and their caregivers together; it should be noted that her laboratory has a strict ethical premise that each dog they study has a name and a home.
Trying to understand the perspective of the dog is like being an anthropologist in a strange land, a land inhabited only by dogs. We may not be able to perfectly translate every tail movement and barking, but it is enough to observe them carefully to be able to interpret a significant part of them. So, let's look at what the natives of that land do.

In the lab they study the potential of a dog´s sense of smell and they observe the interactions between dogs and their caregivers, specifically the impact the caregiver-dog interaction has on the dog’s well-being.

By observing dogs through the lens of science, we will find that some of what we think we know about them is completely proven; on the other hand, other things that seem true, after a closer examination, generate more doubts than we thought. By looking at our dogs from another perspective—from the dog’s perspective—we can see new things that are not normally apparent to those limited by the human brain.
